With a population of almost 200,000, Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populated city in Utah. Most shorten the name of the city to Salt Lake or SLC.
Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City by a group of Mormon pioneers, who were led by their prophet, Brigham Young, who fled the hostility and violence found in the Midwestern United States. Salt Lake City is still the home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as LDS, or the Mormon Church.
Although originally prospering from Mining and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, it has since been developed into a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry, primarily based on skiing. IN fact, Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The modern economy is driven by government, trade, transportation, utilities, and professional and business services. Its geographical central location in the US has dubbed it the name the "Crossroads of the West". Within it lies Interstate 15, a major corridor for freight traffic and the area is host to many regional distribution centers.
The major employer in the area is the western North America Delta Air Lines hub at Salt Lake City International Airport. Some other major employers include the University of Utah, Sinclair Oil Corporation, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other firms headquartered in the city include Alpha Graphics, Zions Bancorporation, Sinclair Oil Corporation, and Smith's Food and Drug (owned by national grocer Kroger). In the metropolitan area, major companies include: Arctic Circle Restaurants, Franklin Covey, and Overstock.com.
